Adventures in Australia-May 2016

I am almost embarrassed to admit that I have become lazy about travel. I think it’s the air here in Australia. Or the beauty or something. I just do not feel the need to jump on a airplane at every turn anymore.

BUT I realize I am living in Australia and I’ve only seen like 1 mile of it. So I decided to take a quick trick up to Cairns. BAD IDEA. Normally I would research the crap out of a new location before booking a trip. Since I’ve been to Cairns before, I did not for this trip. OOPS.If I had bothered to research my trip on the day I booked it, which was 2 days before departing, I would have seen the weather forecast. It was not ideal for a trip the Great Barrier Reef. The clouds were cool for flying…..

But for taking a boat trip to Green Island, not so much. Thank goodness I did not opt for the trip the Outer Reef. And for having the foresight not to eat. It was not pleasant. This is the only picture I took. And that is not a filter

It’s safe to say,  I did not find Nemo.

The next day I had  super early wake up call to go up the Atherton Tablelands. Where I checked another item from my bucket list, a Hot Air Balloon ride.

I did 60 minute ride and I probably would have been ok with a 30 minutes. Apparently my motion sickness is no joke. The best part of the ride was when my friend Dawn called on Facetime, with Quinn and Olivia. So fun that I got to share it with friend in Dallas, Texas while I was flying somewhere over Mareeba, Queensland.

I am sure I’ll make it back to the Reef one day. At least I now know I need to load on motion sickness cures beforehand.

Until next time, safe travels!

Before deciding to move to Brisbane, I had only spent 3 days here.  The first day I arrived I went to Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary, the 2nd day I went on a tour of Gold Coast, and the 3rd day I did Hop On Hop Off bus.  So basically I did not do much.  When friends would say oh I am going to come visit you in Brisbane, I said ok, not sure why there is not much to do. OOPS. I have not even began to scratch the surface of all the things there are to do in Brisbane. My friend, Katy had a trip planned to Perth to see her Dad, so she added on a side trip to see me.

Even though Katy had been to Australia numerous times before she had not taken her requisite koala photo, so off to Lone Pine we went. We were there for about 2 minutes and my fearless friend was making new friends.

After a tiring morning of avoiding getting attacked by random animals, we took a cruise along the river. By cruise, I mean we hopped on the river bus for a scenic tour of the Brisbane. For a $1.25  it’s a great way to spend a few hours.  Even if your friend is wearing Koala ears.

IMG_0210

We got off the bus boat at South Bank Parklands  It’s a quite enjoyable area with a man made beach. ( Totally reminds me of Centennial Beach in  Naperville). It was quite surreal to have been in the “wild” in the morning, out to “sea” for lunch and then be transported to another world by the afternoon. And we never even left Brisbane.

The more I discover around Brisbane, the more I am enjoying it. There is just so much to see and do.
Now this blog post would not be an official adventure of Katy and Flo without some craziness.  On Friday, we innocently got into the elevator at the Hilton, with a really tall guy.  Apparently, I was quite obvious in my attempt to read what that logo on his clothing said. I said Rugby? Yep, New Zealand Highlanders. Then 2 more of his team mates go on the elevator. And we did what anyone in our situation would have done, selfie…..

IMG_0224The whole team was quite lovely and friendly. I perhaps see a trip to New Zealand in my future to catch a proper game. I will say this riding the elevator in the Hilton provided quite good entertainment.

Until the next time, safe travels……

Australia is a fascinating country. It’s roughly the same size as the United States but only has 24 million people vs 319 million. Of the those 24 million, 85 % live with in 50 km’s of a coastline.

I am currently living in Brisbane, which is in the state of Queensland. It located in the northern half of Australia, and has moderate tropical feel all year round.

Since leaving the snow and gloomy winter days behind in Chicago, I have been trying to embrace my new city’s blue skies and lush vegetation.

I am staying near the Brisbane City Botanic Gardens. On Sunday mornings, they have a Garden Market.

Brisbane-City-Botanic-Gardens-Map.mediumthumb

I was up early and headed out to walk the Garden before the market opened. I entered at Albert St. and turned left and took the path along the river, with full intention of heading back towards Albert St, which where the markets are. Now I remember seeing the Mangroves but I am not quite sure where I went off the path. I was so lost in my music, that it took me a while  for me to notice that I was no longer in the garden. I was a bike path along the River. I kept walking until I figured out a way to get off the path.  I finally saw a crazy set of stairs and a elevator ( lift).  Just was I was approaching the elevator, a lady was pushing the up button. I guess it was stairs for me. Luckily,  she turned saw me and held the elevator. I thought wow we could totally be friends.

Well my new BFF agreed and we started chatting. I told her about my misadventure and how I was new to town and learning my way around.  She introduced herself as Helen and invited me to go the movies with her and husband, Steve, that afternoon. I left safety of my comfort zone and said sure why not. Well then she said OK, we will pick you. The paranoid neurotic American in me tried to rear it’s ugly head. I just smacked it away and said Great!

Now Helen had the same thoughts as me, called me and said here is, my information, you can google me. And upon arriving to pick me up, providing business cards of both her and Steve with someone just so they knew who I was with.  I told her I knew we would be friends when you held the elevator for me. We went and saw The Reverent.  Which was grizzly but it was nice to have people to talk about it afterwards.

I am slowly acclimating to living here in Brisbane. I do miss a lot of things from home, but I embracing the change.  I am definitely learning to eat healthier, an American medium is as Australian large. I am learning to live with what I have, given that I still living out of a suitcase. I am surviving with my extremely crazy hair, ponytails have become my BFF.  I am digging the no tipping culture. I am getting my fill of vitamin D on a daily basis, rather then have to take a tablet.  I am living without a DVR oh and a TV. I would like to see how Downton Abbey ends but it will show up eventually here. I don’t take my phone everywhere, I am embracing being unplugged, well that and nobody is really calling me.

While so far this journey has not been all rainbows, I am taking it for what it is, one day at time.

Brisbane, Australia- February 2016

Pages from MA2016xI think I’ll move to Australia, I thought one day.  Wouldn’t it be great if life was that easy. The universe has conspired to have me move to Australia. I am still waiting to find out why, but I am enjoying the adventure so far.

Booking a one way ticket is kind of a pain. For some reason, round trip’s tend to be cheaper. But if you don’t take the return, it’s considered a throwaway ticket. And well the airlines, frown upon that.

Since I was planning on being in Australia for at least a few weeks,  I tried to fly with one of the airlines I have status with, so I could utilize my additional baggage allowance. I ended up booking my flights on Fiji Airways. I would be flying Chicago to Los Angeles to Nadi to Brisbane.

For some reason, something kept telling me that I would not be flying on Fiji Airways. A few weeks before I was leaving,  I even started looking for alternatives. Which was quite odd because my ticket was non-refundable. I finally accepted I was flying Fiji Airways and decided to make the best of it.

Well 2 days before I was scheduled to leave, Virgin Australia posted on Twitter that due to Cyclone Winston, they were suspended flights to and from Nadi. **Twitter is a traveler’s best friend.  Hmmm I should check Fiji Airways. All flights for that day had been cancelled. A waiver was in place and I would need to call. And let the games begin.

I had made my booking with Orbitz. So I called them first. I was told I could cancel the reservation, but I would need to call Fiji Airways. I called was on hold for 15 minutes, got an agent and soon as I told my issue, the call was disconnected. So I then started looking to my options for another flight. I called United Airlines, oh sure we have a seat for you for $8,817.  I called American Airlines and I was able to book a flight in coach but us an upgrade for business for $1400. I could not provide my credit card fast enough. So new flight booked, I tried my luck with Fiji Airways again. After 45 minutes on hold, I gave up and called back to Orbitz.

After a quick hold, I explained to the agent my issue and asked could my itinerary be cancelled. He said no that I had to fly or lose the value. I tried to explain that the flights were not operating and so what were my options. He called Fiji Airways and they told him that if I wanted to change my flights I would have to pay a fee?  I said well that contradicts their website. He said I was misreading. Really?

So of course I asked for a supervisor. She called Fiji Airways and tried to feed me the same line. I politely referred her to Fiji Airway’s own website.  She came back and said, well the guy is now saying ok maybe they can put you on Qantas direct from LA to Brisbane, but they had not for sure cancelled my flight yet so I would have to call back. I said no, either cancel my ticket or deal with American Express. I’ve had enough. The supervisor came back on the line and said I was good to go. I had been rebooked on Qantas. And if I had any further problems with my ticket, to please NOT call back to Orbitz, but deal with Fiji Airways myself.

I have used Orbitz, a lot in the past, especially when I dealing with a weird itinerary. I’ve never had a problem, but I must say I would reconsider using them in the future after this little fiasco.

I can tell you with absolutely certainty, I will be avoiding Fiji Airways in the future. I am sure they are lovely airline, when things work.

My new home, for now…….

After a quick visit in Melbourne, it was time for me to move on to the next destination on my trip, Brisbane. Brisbane is 3rd largest city in Australia. It’s located north of Sydney, in the state of Queensland.  It’s also the only state in Australia where you can legally hold a Koala.

IMG_0331

I did the typical tourist activities in Brisbane, including a visit to Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary. Where you too can hold a Koala. Or just check out the ones just hanging out.

IMG_0339

Or feed some seriously lazy kangaroo’s…..

IMG_0351

Brisbane city itself does not have many tourist attractions, but there a lot to see close by. Including the amazing beaches on the Gold Coast, wineries and rain forests.

I enjoyed my time in Brisbane, it was interesting. The weather was much nicer then Melbourne. It’s funny though, the locals were like it’s so humid. Being a Chicago gal, I kept making faces. Saying really? This is bad? It was delightful to me.

Alas, it was time for the final leg of my trip. And no, for those of you wondering, I was not headed to Perth to see Sam Smith. I thought about it but opted for the a more relaxed destination.  And well my 49th country…..

Stay tuned to find out where…….

I am always amazed at my ability to sleep after having crossed multiple time zones. I rarely get jet lag but boy do I get food lag. I quickly got over that on my first morning.

I had the most amazing croissant, outside of Europe, for breakfast. And well it’s no surprise the coffee was unbelievable, given that I was in the coffee capital of the world. And don’t get me started on the bread. I forgive Australia for not having proper bacon, only because their bread is insane.

IMG_0189 IMG_0190

Properly sated, I headed out for a day trip down to the Mornington Peninsula with Melbourne Coastal Tours. I choose this tour company because they are geared to small group, maximum 11 people. We visited a a goat farm, several wineries and a strawberry farm. It was an amazing day.  I was lucky enough to meet Jackie and Sue, who were in Melbourne celebrating Jackie’s birthday.  New friends, blue skies and wine, who could ask for more?

When I returned to my hotel, my bag was still not there…….. Apparently it had arrived in Sydney on Saturday morning, but had to clear customs and it was too late for it get a flight to Melbourne. UGH!

The next day I headed out on the Great Ocean Road Tour.   It made a long day, but it was so worth it. We made several stops along the way. A lot of scenic look outs, koalas in the tree’s, kangaroo’s in the wild and cheeky birds that would just land on your head

And when I arrived back at the hotel, my bag finally decided to grace me with it’s presence. Just in time for me to head up to Brisbane. Stay tuned for Part 3

After my previous trip in April, you have to wonder why would I go back to Australia again so soon. 2 words, Fare Sale….

It’s not a huge secret, that I like to travel over Thanksgiving weekend. Normally I head over to Europe, to enjoy the Christmas Markets. This year for various reasons, I decided to switch it up. But don’t worry, I will still be getting in my Christmas Market fix.

It’s also not a huge secret that I am sucker for a coupon.  Yes I realize you do not really save money by spending money on something you did not need in the first place. So long story short, I had a coupon for Qantas and they just happen to have a fare sale.  And look at that I am booked to go back to Australia.

I was actually on the fence if I was actually going to go thru with the actual trip.  Just as I was considering cancelling, American Airlines, announced a promotion in which I could fast track to Gold, Platinum or Executive Platinum for about 1/4 of the normal requirements.  You all know how much I love my Star Alliance,  but I was already cheating on them by flying Qantas. So I figured I would make it a full on affair, and go for the status on American.

Capture2

It turned out, my flights to and from Sydney would give me Executive Platinum status. So in the end the decision was made for me,  I was going on this trip.

On day of departure, I was so proud of myself, for being so organized. I got everything into 1 suitcase and 1 carry on bag. Since my tickets were not linked, I booked a early then needed flight to LA on American. I had a 4 hour layover, so I made plans to meet up with a friend for dinner. Of course as luck would have it on day of departure, Chicago had some impressive thunderstorms.

Surprisingly there was no line for TSA Pre-Check, they must all be flying United. I made my way to the lounge to see my flight was now delayed til 5.30. About 30 minutes later another alert, now 6.40. Uh oh, I was now in danger zone with my connection in LA.

My flight finally boarded around 6. I am not sure what time we took off. What I do know is that since I was scheduled for 3:30pm departure I had not eaten lunch. And well you know that the food options in the US lounges is not an option. With all the running around I sort of forgot to eat.  #TRAVELFAIL-1. When we were finally departing, I realized I was a bit hungry, oops. My only food option was Kale and Spinach Pasta, which if you recall my Boston trip, I am not a fan of spinach. So I barely ate. I feel asleep and woke up to my blood sugar taking a dive. And no I am not diabetic, just stupid.  This has happened to me a few times before. First time on a flight to LA, where I actually fainted in the aisle. It also happened on my last American Airlines flight in 2011, in which the cranky flight attendant refused to give me water. Clearly, the fault is mine, I need to eat more when I am traveling.

I did make my flight to LA, with about 5 minutes to spare. There were about 10 people connecting on to Australia on my flight, so when our Qantas was delayed a few minutes I thought it was for our bags to be loaded. Until we arrived in Sydney, and the dreaded passenger blah, blah and Flo, please see an agent….

My bag did not make my flight to Sydney, nor did it make the flight that left and hour later. It was still in LA. I was told it was on the next flight to Sydney and it would arrive the next day. Except I was fly down to Melbourne. No worries, they would put it on the next flight and deliver it my hotel.

No problem, except I was traveling light. No back up clothes in my carry on. #TRAVELFAIL-2

Travel Tip-if you are going to be foolish enough to check a bag with out any back up clothes in your carry on, be smart enough to know your sizes in whatever country you are visiting. Also if you are going to Asia, just don’t check a bag. NOTHING will fit you. And I say that with love. You maybe an Extra Small in the US, you probably will not fit Extra Large in Asia. You’ve been warned.

Qantas did give me an emergency cash card to go shopping.  Apparently Australian sizes are “real” sizes.  They are 2 size bigger then US. So a US women’s size 6 is a 10 in Australia. Shopping for me was traumatic. First off, it’s summer in Australia so the stores were full of summer dresses and t-shirts. Which would have been ok if I had stayed in Sydney, where it was 40c/104F weather. But I was in Melbourne and it was 19c/66F.

I tried Target first. Yes, Mandy, Target is in Australia. I got some basics, but no clothes. Next I hit Myer, which is like a Macy’s in the States. After 20 minutes of wondering around, a nice Sales Associate took pity on me. She found me a simple white t-shirt and some black leggings. 2 sizes 2 small!  And that simple white t-shirt, $89 Australian dollars or about $65 US. It’s a wonder that Australian’s bring empty suitcases with them to the States when they travel.

IMG_0191

I admit I probably should have taken a nap before I went shopping. I might have actually thought about what I needed. Like socks, pajamas, toiletries. It was only after I got back to the hotel did I realize I needed more then I purchased. Luckily the hotel could provide the basic toiletries, including a hairbrush. Well I broke the brush in my hair. I have since decided that my toiletry bag will always fly with my in my carry one.

Stay tuned for Part 2, Melbourne.

I should start this post with saying that I realize I am truly blessed to be able to travel the world the way that I do. I thank God for every opportunity and for keeping me safe while I am on my adventures. BUT sometimes my trips do not go as planned, this trip being one of them. It was just a series of unfortunate events. The worse part, Sam Smith having to cancel his concert in Melbourne due to illness.

There were good parts, like beautiful sunrise/sunset in Cairns. An amazing view from my hotel room in Sydney. Hearing the Sydney Symphony Orchestra play in the Sydney Opera House. And watching an Aussie Rules Football game.

But ultimately, what I remember from this trip is that fact that Sam was sick. I know know get over it, I was in Australia.

Here are some pictures….. of course none of Sam.

I heard that Sam maybe be rescheduling his tour dates for Australia in December. I just might have to redo this trip……
